Indianapolis Water Damage Prevention
Posted on 4:29 pm by IRCS
Water damage in our homes is something we all hope we never have to deal with. However, often times, we only think about it after the fact. While many times water damage is not avoidable, the truth is, oftentimes it may be. There are a few things we can all do to at least help prevent coming home to a disaster.
How To Avoid Water Damage
Here in the Indianapolis area (the colder region), it is advisable to disconnect outside hoses over the winter. Regularly check and clean your gutters and make sure the downspouts promote water flowing away from, and not back up next to your home. If you’re going to be away for an extended period, turn off the water main. However, unplug the ice maker and water softener if you do. Check appliances that are hooked up to water regularly. If you notice hoses are brittle or hardened, replace them. Repair any small drips or leaks immediately. It only takes a few days for mold to form, so take action to find the source and repair it. If you have a sump pump, check it often. Consider installing a second pump on top as a backup. Hard rains or a stuck float are frustrating when they occur.
Will Home Insurance Cover Water Damage?
Lastly, most standard Central Indiana homeowner’s policies cover accidental or sudden occurrences. Evidence of a lack of proper maintenance can, in some cases, may cause an insurance company to reject a claim. Never hesitate to ask your agent about proper home maintenance!
