How to find the hidden leak

Once you recognize the signs of damage from water in your home, the next step is to discover the hidden leak. Sometimes you may need to contact a professional, but before you do, see if you can find the leak on your own. Often, it is a simple matter of fixing a leaky pipe or checking the seals around tubs or toilets. If you can pinpoint the general area where the damage has occurred, you can usually find the source of the leak. Read our previous post on how to recognize signs of hidden water.
If the signs of water show up as stains on the ceiling, then the problem is most likely a leak in the roof. However, when the water is inside the home in other areas, there are a few other things you can check.
– Check your water meter or your recent water bills to see if there is a rise is water usage that can’t be accounted for. This could mean a leak in the pipes somewhere in your home.
– Check the seals around tubs and toilets. If you suspect the leak is in one of your toilets, turn them off one by one, checking the water meter after doing so. If you see the red flow indicator on the meter moving while a toilet is turned off, then that toilet is not likely to be the source of the leak. The leak is stemming somewhere else.
– Check your hot water tank to see if the drainpipe or pressure relief valve is leaking.
– Check the hose bibs underneath sinks.
If you have been unable to locate the source of the leak, contact a professional right away. Damage left unchecked can quickly add up to potential health problems and serious damage to your home.
